Reunion Weekend Events

The Horrmann Library is happy to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Class of '59! We hope that you will join us here during Reunion Weekend.

The following Reunion events are to be held in the library:

June 3 - June 8 : Spotlight Gallery Exhibit- "Fifties Reflections: An Homage to the Class of 1959"
We found some fabulous photos in the archive that we want to share with you. If you recognize any of the students/staff in the photos, please use the cards on the display table to let us know who they are! Special thanks to Lee Manchester for designing and installing the exhibit!

Book Renewals for the Summer

Unless otherwise noted, all Horrmann Library books are due back on Friday, May 8th.

If you would like to renew your books to keep them over the summer, please bring proof of your Summer or Fall 2009 registration to the Library Circulation Desk. We will then be able to renew your books with a new due date of August 31, 2009 (the first day of the Fall 2009 semester).

Books borrowed through Interlibrary Loan do not apply. Please contact Irene Hunt for questions regarding Interlibrary Loan book renewals at 718-420-4113.

Study Areas & Library Hours for Reading Days and Finals

The Library will offer silent, quiet, and group study areas during Reading Days and Finals Week.

Please note the following Study Zones:

Upper Level - Silent Study (no talking)

Main Level - Quiet Study (occasional whispered conversation only) - Don't forget the new permanent Quiet Study Area at the rear of the main floor!

Lower Level - Group Study

Thank you for respecting the quiet study needs of your fellow students during this time.

Cite it Right! Workshop 4/23/09

Come one, come all, to a hands-on workshop about plagiarism prevention and how to best cite your sources. We will discuss common problems in avoiding plagiarism, including common knowledge issues, paraphrasing, and direct quotations, as well as proper citation styles.

Workshop will be held in the Horrmann Library SmartLab (located on the Lower Level) on Thursday, April 23, from 4:30-5:30pm.

New Research Databases!

The Horrmann Library is happy to announce that we have four new online databases for your research needs. The databases are accessible through the Online Databases page of the library website, and feel free to follow the links below as well (students, staff, and faculty attempting to access these databases from off-campus will need to log in using their Mailport usernames and passwords).

Grolier Encyclopedia Americana (link coming soon)
Offers thousands of articles which include maps, flags, tables, and illustrations, as well as links to articles, Web sites, periodicals and bibliographies. The database also includes access to the Americana Journal, which provides students with historical context for worldwide current events with links from encyclopedia articles to thousands of international news briefs, all updated weekly.

Health and Wellness Resource Center

Main subject area covered: Health
Includes nearly 400 health/medical journals, hundreds of pamphlets, and articles from 2,200 general interest publications related to health and medicine.

New York State Newspapers

Main subject area covered: all subjects
Database of 28 major newspapers published in the state of New York, including the New York Times and the New York Post. Full-text coverage varies by newspaper and ranges from 1985 to the present.

Nursing and Allied Health Collection
Main subject area covered: all subjects
Includes the full text of approximately 400 journals covering all aspects of nursing and allied health.

New Library Vending Machines!

We're happy to announce that coffee, cocoa, tea, and snacks are available from the library's new vending machines, located on the lower level in the new Media Viewing Room.

As always, please be respectful to your fellow library patrons and clean up after yourself!
Also, please be aware of our library food policies [click to view policies] and keep food and drink out of the library SmartLab. Coffee and candy aren't compatible with computers! :)
